2012 GOP Presidential Nomination

The 2012 GOP Nomination Page  has been updated.  Please go and check it out here.  Predictably, there have been quite a few changes in the last 2 weeks.

  • Sarah Palin’s numbers are falling everywhere.  She even lost the lead in two of the states(including Alaska) she led two weeks ago.  If she is going to run, she needs to make a move soon.
  • Mike Huckabee, while looking less and less likely like he’ll run, continues to impress throughout the country.  He picked up two more states(the two that Palin lost) and would be the odds on favorite if he decided to run.
  • Romney is still a strong second in the delegate count, but the last 2 weeks have not been good for him.  He hasn’t lost any states, but if this downward trend continues he will.
  • Donald Trump is doing quite well in the newest polls, however, that he barely registers in my averages.  Why?  My averages count polls over a period of time with the most current polls weighed more heavily than older polls.  While this gives more importance to newer polls(which would help Trump), the inclusion of older polls also rewards consistency and diminishes the likelihood of statistical anomalies in any particular poll.  If Trump stays high in the polls, the upcoming projections will reflect that.

John Boehner Just Face Palmed

I doubt that John Boehner wants to frame the GOP stance on raising the debt ceiling in the words of Michele Bachmann.

The Republican-led U.S. House has the power of the purse strings, Bachmann said. “Barack Obama gets no money, zero money unless we give it to him. So he can be held hostage,” she said.

If the GOP can’t control their message and Boehner can’t control his caucus, the next few months are going to be rough for him and the electoral chances of the party.  I still contend that John Boehner will not be Speaker of the House by the end of May.

Alan Simpson Is The Only Man Who Makes Any Sense

Former Senator Alan Simpson(R-WY) had some choice words for the candidates for the 2012 GOP Presidential Nomination today on Hardball with Chris Matthews.  He was absolutely right, too.  There are issues that the GOP can run on and win nationwide.  Even though Obama is vulnerable, the GOP field has quickly becoming a Who’s Who of culture warriors and media whores. Not exactly a strategy to win over independent voters.

If the GOP nominee wins his/her primary race strictly on an anti-Obama, culture war platform, that candidate has no shot at beating Obama.  They must have a credible vision of their own that appeals to the American electorate.  Unfortunately, the field is so populated with those types that the moderates in the field(Romney and Pawlenty) are being dragged to the far right by the likes of Michelle Bachmann and Donald Trump.

Mitt Romney Is Running For President….Who Knew?

Mitt Romney surprised everyone today by announcing the creation of a Presidential exploratory committee.  The political universe is shocked by this development.  They thought he just liked Iowa and New Hampshire as winter vacation spots.

Seriously, Romney and Tim Pawlenty are probably the only two current Republican candidates for President that can beat Barack Obama.  He is strong centrist that has a shot against Obama in states in all regions of the United States and is a good enough fundraiser to challenge Omaba’s predicted war chest.

He does need to stop ripping off AquaFresh though.  Take a gander at his new campaign branding compared to that of that fine toothpaste.

Stay Classy Mississippi

I grew up only 20 minutes from the Mississippi border and have been to the state countless times.  I even dated a girl from Hernando, MS for two years.  None of the following surprises me in the least.:

We asked voters on this poll whether they think interracial marriage should be legal or illegal- 46% of Mississippi Republicans said it should be illegal to just 40% who think it should be legal. For the most part there aren’t any huge divides in how voters view the candidates or who they support for the nomination based on their attitudes about interracial marriage but there are a few exceptions.

Palin’s net favorability with folks who think interracial marriage should be illegal (+55 at 74/19) is 17 points higher than it is with folks who think interracial marriage should be legal (+38 at 64/26.) Meanwhile Romney’s favorability numbers see the opposite trend. He’s at +23 (53/30) with voters who think interracial marriage should be legal but 19 points worse at +4 (44/40) with those who think it should be illegal. Tells you something about the kinds of folks who like each of those candidates.

Godwin’s Law Should Be Renamed Gingrich’s Law

Mother Jones has a compilation of Newt Gingrich’s greatest quotes over the last 30 years.  I never realized one man could compare absolutely any political disagreement to Nazis, Fascists, or Nazi appeasers.  Some of my favorites:

1985 Upset with Democrats’ foreign policy stance, Gingrich observes, “Adolph Hitler must somewhere be burning in hell, wishing he had lived two generations later, so he could manipulate Americans instead of Englishmen.”

1994 He sums up his political philosophy: “People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz. I see evil all around me every day.”

1995 Following the House GOP’s triumphant 1994 election victory, Gingrich sends all the Republican freshman House members copies of the GOPAC memo suggesting they refer to their opponents as “traitors.”

2008 Gingrich tells Bill O’Reilly that “there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us.” The gay and secular fascist movement, Gingrich charges, is “prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it.”

Barack Obama Launches Reelection Campaign

President Barack Obama launched his reelection campaign through a video emailed to his supporters this weekend.  In the video, it’s obvious that Obama campaign think the 2012 election will be fought in the Mountain West.  He’s probably right with polling showing him fairly safe at the moment in the Midwest and Northeast.

2012 GOP Presidential Nomination

If you look at the top of my page, you will see a new tab next to the About Me section.  It contains a rough estimation of where the nomination stands at the moment based on the polling available for each state.  I will be updating it weekly.  Check it out and let me know any ideas to improve it….which I am sure it can be.

Mike Hukabee Wants Someone To Hold Me At Gun Point

I can’t believe this guy is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2012.

Newt Gingrich Is Scared Of The Flying Spaghetti Muslim

Newt, Newt, Newt.  I am so sorry that I’ve written about you so much over the past month.  I didn’t plan on it.  I really didn’t.  I admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of yours back in the 1990′s and I thought it was pretty neat the way Bill Clinton outmaneuvered you politically on just about everything after the 1994 midterms.  Still, I have no beef with you.

So Newt, why do you make me write about you what seems like every other day?  Why do you make the entire premise of you presidential campaign opposing anything that Barack Obama supports even when you had come out in favor of the same policy only a week before?  Why do you do this to me?

I was hoping to stay away from you for at least a week, but then you unleash this gem onto our collective minds:

“I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they’re my age they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American.”

Now, I am an atheist so maybe I am not an observer willing to see other atheists without bias.  It is possible that that some are militant and that some go overboard in the pursuit of “tolerance.”  These are actions that we as Athesists should not condone.  What is entirely not possible is that radical Islamists would control any institution—committees, bake sales, or nations—that atheists also control.

That is just the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while.  Not just the dumbest thing you’ve said in a while, Newt.  The dumbest thing period.  Remember Newt, I spent a week at SXSW in Austin surrounded by drunken hipsters in face paint and skinny jeans.  I heard some pretty dumb shit, but none of it compares to this classic.

The strange thing is that Newt isn’t a dumb guy.  He really isn’t.  However, he is cynical and this is an example of him saying anything to get the Republican nomination in 2012.  ”Secular”, “Atheism”, “Radical”, and “Islamist” are just code words for Newt to reach for some sort of base.  They mean nothing to him other than the possibility of votes.
